hour of the wolf

don’t you know enough now?
I’ve told you how it ends
how everything darkens
in the hour of the wolf
how every man falls
in the hour of the axe
I’ve told you of the tears
in the aftermath, in the darkness of time
in the worlds between
the nowhere
that is existence
don’t you know enough now?
the earth will tremble again
after the swallowing of the sun
and the filling of graves
sons finding fathers, fathers finding fathers
we have met our ancestors
the earth will rise from the oceans
returning to its place
between the heat and the cold
it will be new, and it will be old
don’t you know enough now?
when the most beautiful man
walks the garden, he will find us
just lying there, waiting
we will be chess pieces in the grass
you, the queen
and I
your peasant
