Sunlight on the Edge

Morning slips through the broken cabin window,
light pooling across the floorboards.
The lake holds its breath.
No boats.
No engines.
Only reeds shifting
where the shoreline bends.
Someone said
this was the end of the world.
The road disappeared years ago.
The town followed.
Still, the sun arrives
without hesitation.
I kneel at the water
and press my hands
into the cold earth.
If I leave them there,
will anything take root?
The lake says nothing.
But the light keeps spreading.
